Ice Spike

Ice Spike

I thought ice spikes were crampons until I found this growing in the freezer. Apparently when really clean water (distilled or reverse osmosis water) freezes, like all ice, it starts on the outside and freezes inward, expanding as it goes. But really clean water freezes in such a way that the water in the middle of the cube gets squeezed and the only place to go is up.
