Thunderstorm

August 3, 2023 - Rain showers on summer afternoons are normal in the Rockies, although this summer was wetter than average. It might start raining around 2:00 p.m. and be done by 2:10. It could start again in a few minutes or wait a few days. We can sit on the patio watching it rain miles away with storm clouds passing to the north or south of us but we don’t get a drop. Occasionally it rains for hours. The valley we live in is high at 6,600 ft with the surrounding mountains exceeding 11,000 ft. This mean that funnel clouds are unusual here. However, yesterday one was sighted by a driver passing over Rabbit Ears Pass (The high point on US 40 just south of Steamboat Springs). Someone else (anonymous) in the valley caught some video from which I have taken a screen shot.

We didn’t see the funnel cloud but we did notice an unusual cloud. I took these photos from 9:03 to 9:05 p.m. You might notice rain along the left (south) edge of the main cloud.

Crazy weather for here!
