Rainy Day in Camp

Cliffs along County Road 667

August 19, 2022 - We traveled down three Forest Service roads before finding a campsite we liked. The one we found was by a creek and surrounded by pine trees. There was an interesting cliff across the road. But it was also near the road and we had campers on both sides about 200 yards away. We prefer a more secluded spot. But it was getting late so we took the spot.

We woke up to a sunny day with temperatures in the high 60’s. We had some trailer modifications planned so after breakfast we got to work. We have a camp table and solar panel that we pack in the floor of the trailer when we are traveling. Since they are in the floor, when we pull into camp they have to come out of the trailer even if we don’t plan to use them. Our plan was to install a couple of straps on one side of the sitting area so these item can stay in the trailer. I was nervous about putting holes in the camper. I measured and remeasured. When I was satisfied, we installed four attachment points for the straps. Since the straps also go around our trailer’s table I wanted to minimize the stress on the table. If it doesn’t work we can still get some bolts and washers and try again with the same holes.

Straps Installed in Camper

After our home “renovation project,” it was time for a walk to check out that interesting cliff. The cliff looks volcanic in origin and has caves. There may be a photograph there if the light gets better. Then we were off to look for flowers, mushrooms and anything else that caught our eye.

Something sure caught Dennis’ eye! A better camp site. It was only 1,000 yards from our camp. We scurried back to the trailer to pack up before anyone else found it. A quick pack, followed by a speedy camp set up found us in a secluded spot surrounded by trees, wildflowers, and the sound of the creek. It was perfect.

And then it started to rain. More camp setup followed to get the awning up. I got soaked. I changed clothes and hung my wet things to dry before settling in front of the portable fire pit to research the flowers I had found earlier.

Penstemon - I couldn’t find the variety

Then it occurred to us. We have popcorn! Yes, we made popcorn over our fire pit. It looks a bit precarious in this shot but later we remembered we have a grate we can use in the future.

We found another photographic opportunity from the middle of the creek. Look for his blog post about the photo.
