Spring 23 May

This is the daily log for our Spring 2023 trip. It was written during our trip so people could find us if they need to. (If we got lost or for family emergencies) It was written with the most recent day at the top for easy reading at the time. If you are reading it now, scroll to the bottom to start reading. (watch the dates)

Slot Canyon in Grand-Staircase Escalante National Monument

Campsite Home, May 7 - Sunday

Jeep update: We had a small problem this morning. The Jeep wouldn’t start. After some tinkering we got it started but we decided to drive home. We didn’t want to risk getting stuck in a remote location. We think the trailer drained the Jeep battery. We will be rewiring that.

This will be my last daily post but the weekly tales of our adventures will continue on Sundays. We will resume our photo posts soon. Also, we are still working on that map!

We found this at home.

Not Snow, Hail!

May 6 - Saturday - Moving to the Holiday Inn in Kanab, UT for showers and laundry.

May 5 - Friday - We are back on Buckskin Gulch today. We spoke to a trail volunteer, who was building the ladder shown below. He told us entry to Buckskin Gulch by the Middle Trail is under eight feet of water so the section we planned to do this weekend, is off.

Trying Out the New Ladder

Here is the old ladder!

Nothing cleans a slot canyon like a flash flood!

May 4 - Thursday - Catstair Canyon turned out to be more technical than we were up to so we practiced route finding. It was still a good day. I only took one photo and it was not pretty. This is the main road through the area US 89.

Yes! Crushed cars are cabled together to support the road. I counted 27 cars all in the area shown in this photo.

May 3 - Wednesday - Today turned out to be a planning day. We visited the ranger station to get conditions of various trails then hiked the Moon Rocks Trail.

May 2 - Tuesday - Day hiking to Edmaier’s Secret via Buckskin Gulch Trail today.

Buckskin Gulch Slot Canyon

Campsite 15, May 1 - Monday - Today we moved to southern Escalante near Kanab, UT. Actually we’re just north of the Buckskin Gulch Trailhead.

Scenery Along Cottonwood Canyon “Road”

It’s supposed to rain Wednesday into Thursday so the mud may keep us in camp. If it does, I will work on Bob’s request to post a map of our travels. It will probably show where we camped. We have some bugs to work out, but then we like a challenge.
